What’s Happening
Portugal has officially joined a growing network of pro-Israel parliamentary groups by launching the Portugal Parliamentary Israel Allies Caucus. With this addition, there are now 54 Israel Allies Caucuses worldwide dedicated to fostering political support for Israel through engagement in faith-based diplomacy.
Why It Matters
The timing of Portugal’s commitment is critical, as it comes in the wake of the horrific October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel. The caucus seeks to underscore the significance of worldwide solidarity with Israel and dismantle anti-Israel misinformation with essential dialogue rooted in facts.
Key Contributors
The Israel Allies Foundation (IAF) has been the principal architect of this diplomatic network. Since its inception in 2004 and subsequent expansion across all continents, the IAF has consistently prioritized enhancing Israel’s international relationships.
The current bipartisan leadership within Portugal comprises Liana Reis of the Social Democratic Party and Pedro Frazão of the Chega Party, showcasing a strong, unified support for Israel amongst differing ideological spans.
Strong Support from Leaders
Pedro Frazão emphasized Israel’s crucial role as a global leader and safeguard for Jewish individuals, asserting that Israel’s existence stands firm as a symbol of strength and security. Madelena Barata of the caucus further affirmed the necessity of networks dedicated to Israel’s defense and its right to security.
Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister, MK Sharren Haskel, applauded this new partnership, illuminating how such initiatives reflect the deep-rooted bond and shared values between Israel and Portugal.
A Resilient Diplomacy
Leo van Doesburg from IAF Europe likened the growing coalition to a “diplomatic Iron Dome,” poised to tackle waves of anti-Israel rhetoric and expand its influence throughout Europe, as Portugal becomes the 20th European inclusion within the caucus.
IAF President Josh Reinstein praised this launch, identifying it as a pivotal testament to Israel’s faith-based diplomatic strategies.
