    What it is about

During the famed New York City marathon, more than 150 athletes devoted their participation to five Israeli hostages currently held in captivity in Gaza. Completing the 26.2-mile race, runners aimed to raise awareness about Naama Levy, Doron Steinbrecher, Evyatar David, Ohad Yahalomi, and Edan Alexandr.

    Why it matters

This global event provided a poignant platform for raising awareness about the Israelis being held hostage in Gaza. The arduous race, ending near Columbus Circle, signified resilience and determination, values reflecting the spirit of the Israeli nation and the unity of its supporters around the world. By dedicating the marathon to these hostages, runners expressed solidarity, spotlighting an ongoing humanitarian issue with global implications.

    Community Support

Held under the watchful eyes of the NY Hostages Families Forum and enthusiastic supporters waving Israeli flags adorned with yellow ribbons, the marathon became a symbol of international support for the hostages. Emotional reflections from family members highlighted their longing for the hostages’ return.

    Personal Stories

Yamit Ashkanzi, whose sister Doron is held in Gaza, recounted how the latter was an enthusiastic runner in everyday life. Ashkanzi described how heartening it is that her sister’s image and story reached thousands and that others ran in her stead.

Similarly, Yoni Levy expressed how seeing participants bearing Naama’s picture reminded him of her spirited love for triathlons and races, emphasizing the strike of her absence coupled with appreciation for the worldwide support and fight to bring her home.

    A Unified Effort

In attendance were diverse groups like Team Shalva, composed of over 250 individuals related to IDF soldiers, united by focus on Israel and remembrance of October 7. Their participation underscored accommodation and allegiance to echo peace and resolution in face of adversity caused by holding hostages.
