Netanyahu Vows Heavy Reprisals on Houthis for Missile Attack

    Published on

    What it is about:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has affirmed that Israel will impose severe repercussions on the Houthi rebels in Yemen for their recent missile attack towards central Israel.

    Why it matters:

The Israeli defense approach demonstrates the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens by taking decisive action against aggressors. This assertion of strength underscores Israel’s stance in the ongoing multi-front conflict it faces with Iranian-backed groups.

    What they’re saying:

“This morning, the Houthis launched a surface-to-surface missile from Yemen into our territory,” Netanyahu announced during the weekly cabinet meeting. “They should have known by now that we exact a heavy price for any attempt to harm us,” he stated decisively.

Reflecting on past responses, Netanyahu added, “Those who need a reminder in this matter are invited to visit the port of Hodeidah.” He emphasized, “Anyone who attacks us will not escape,” reaffirming that Hamas has already experienced Israel’s resolve.

    Details from the attack:

According to Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea, the group used a new hypersonic ballistic missile that covered 2,040 km (1,270 miles) within just over eleven minutes. Fortunately, the missile landed in an unpopulated area in central Israel, causing no injuries.

Reuters reported visible smoke in the open field impact zone, although it was unclear if it resulted from the missile itself or a defensive interceptor. This missile attack signifies an escalation as previous Houthi attacks have not penetrated so deep into Israeli territory.

    Historical context:

The Houthis, closely allied with Iran, have targeted Israel repeatedly citing solidarity with Palestinians since the Gaza conflict began with a Hamas attack on October 7th. Israel has previously responded robustly, notably with airstrikes on Houthi positions including July’s strategic operations.Furthermore, other Israel attackers like drone strikes from Houthi resulted, including one incident that fatally harmed a citizen in Tel Aviv in July, prompting extensive Israeli reprisals. Israel had faced 40 projectiles’ invasion from Lebanon this last Sunday too intercepted most during this incident regarding news on a secured border front.

    Continuing challenges and government stance:

Prime Minister Netanyahu asserted, “We are in a multi-front campaign against Iran’s evil axis that strives to destroy us.” He reiterated the government’s dedication to retrieve the 101 kidnapped citizens from Gaza and to alter the territorial stability along its northern border, affirming sustained security for evacuees for northern border conflict.

“This requires a change in the balance of power on our northern border. We will do everything necessary to return our residents safely to their homes. I am committed to it, the government is committed to it, and we will not settle for less than that,” Netanyahu said.
