    Published on

    What it is about

In this opinion piece, Rabbi Sholom D. Lipskar addresses the global reaction and Jewish response to a significant tragedy that occurred one year ago on Simchat Torah, unleashing horror and forcing Jews worldwide to reassess their identity and role.

    Why it matters

This reflection is crucial as it highlights the Jewish community’s resilience in the face of unprecedented adversity and underscores the continuous struggle against antisemitism throughout history. It serves to foster unity and strengthen the resolve of the Jewish people in the face of global challenges.

    The tragedy unfolded

A year ago, the Jewish community in Israel was subjected to an indescribable atrocity that reverberated around the world. Initial global reactions were those of shock and disgust, but quickly, voices of support for the perpetrators emerged. This shift in global sentiment saw Jews everywhere reconnecting with their identity, unified in the face of adversity.

Resilience in the wake of horror

Despite facing unprecedented hatred—even from within bastions of Western education—many Jews found a renewed sense of pride and purpose. Parents struggled to explain this newfound intensity of hatred to their children, searching for meaning amid profound sorrow.

Counting the losses and moving forward

As the extent of the tragedy came into full view, with over 1,200 lives lost and countless others taken hostage, the pain deepened. The pressing question remained: how do we, as a community, respond?

    The imperative of unwavering support

Providing assistance to those affected is paramount. Yet beyond immediate relief, there is a reflection necessary for every Jew on how this tragic event should influence their personal journey and collective mission.

    A historical pattern of perseverance

The Jewish people have faced attempts at annihilation many times throughout history, from ancient civilizations to modern-day threats. Each era has presented its own challenges, but the community’s commitment to its faith and values has seen it through.

    The eternal struggle and mission

Antisemitism is a persistent force, manifesting in various forms and times. Rooted in opposition to Jewish values, ethics, and the mission of spreading godliness, this hatred tests the collective spirit. Nevertheless, the Jewish community has consistently embraced its identity, upheld by the teachings of the Torah and divine protection.

    Learning lessons from history

History and statistics highlight the continuous survival and impact of the Jewish people. The covenant with God assures Jewish continuity and prosperity, promising protection and blessings for living in accordance with divine precepts.

Embracing a new year with hope

As the new Jewish year 5785 dawns, there is an opportunity to channel positive energy into creating a future of peace and health. Inspired by the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s prophecies, there is a sense of imminent positive change and redemption.

May this year bring sweetness, peace, and prosperity to all.
