What it is about
An 84-year-old Israeli man was attacked and lightly injured on Saturday evening when he entered the Palestinian town of Qalandiya in the West Bank.
Why it matters
This incident underscores the ongoing dangers and complexities faced by Israeli citizens who inadvertently or intentionally enter areas under Palestinian Authority control. It highlights the persistent hostilities and risks in regions where Israelis are prohibited from entering.
Details
The elderly man reportedly entered the town to refuel his car. According to the Kan public broadcaster, a mob of Palestinians chased and threw stones at his vehicle. Trying to escape, the driver collided with a concrete barrier and sustained light injuries. Fortunately, Palestinian security forces intervened, rescuing him and bringing him to a nearby IDF checkpoint. He was subsequently taken to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Hospital for treatment.
Tragically, videos later showed his car being set on fire by assailants, further underscoring the volatility of the situation.
Related Incidents
Last week, Amnon Muchtar, 67, from Petah Tikva was shot and killed in a similar area by unknown gunmen. The army and police are still investigating whether the motive was terror-related or criminal.
Earlier, Moshe Dadoush also lost his life during a violent carjacking near Qalqilya. Such incidents reflect the increased risks for Israelis in these areas.
Official Response
Qalqilya is located in Area A of the West Bank, under complete Palestinian Authority control; however, the Israeli military often enters these areas. The Israel Police have reiterated that entering Area A is illegal and extremely dangerous for Israeli citizens, warning against such actions for safety reasons.
“The Israel Police reiterates that entry into Area A is prohibited by law and constitutes a real danger to life,” a statement from the police emphasized. While some Israelis enter these regions for shopping, trade, or car repairs, they are urged to remain vigilant and avoid these high-risk areas to prevent such incidences.
