Indictment Sought for 7 Israeli Officers over Star of David Etching

    Published on

    What it’s about

The Department of Internal Police Investigations in Israel has decided to pursue an indictment against seven police officers involved in the arrest of an East Jerusalem resident. The officers are accused of etching a Star of David on the suspect’s face, an action that has garnered considerable international attention.

    Why it matters

Israel places a high value on the professionalism and integrity of its police force. This case emphasizes the commitment to holding officers accountable to the highest standards. Ensuring accountability strengthens the rule of law and maintains public trust in law enforcement institutions.

    The incident

The case dates back to the latter half of 2023, when a substantial police force raided the home of an East Jerusalem resident suspected of drug trafficking. The detainee later appeared in court with an injury on his face, claiming that officers had beaten him and etched the Star of David on his cheek. At the time, the police disputed these allegations, attributing the mark to “shoe laces.”

    Internal investigation

Ynet reported that 16 officers participated in the arrest, yet none were wearing functioning body cameras, described by police as a “malfunction.” Following the incident, the suspect was released from custody. In the ensuing investigation, multiple officers provided testimony, and the detainee was subjected to a specialized forensic exam to verify his claims.

    Statements from officials

Attorney Vadim Shub, head of the Jerusalem Public Defender Office, expressed serious concerns over the alleged violence. “On the face of it, this is a serious incident of violence against a detainee. We followed the procedure of submitting the complaint and turned to the police with an unequivocal demand to carry out an in-depth investigation of the affair. We welcome the decision of the police, and see the importance of eradicating the phenomenon of police violence,” Shub stated.

    The road ahead

This prosecution represents a crucial moment for the Israel Police in its ongoing effort to address any instances of misconduct and maintain excellence in law enforcement practices. The decision to potentially charge these officers shows a transparent and rigorous approach to upholding justice within the ranks of those who serve to protect.
