What it is about

Since the beginning of military operations in Rafah, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Division 162 have successfully neutralized over 1,000 terrorists on their watchlist.

Why it matters

These decisive operations have dismantled key elements of terrorist infrastructure in Rafah, undermining the operational capabilities of Hamas and safeguarding Israel’s security. The successful targeting of these terrorists represents a significant blow to organized violence perpetuated against Israel and contributes to regional stability.

Details

The 162nd Division, which comprises the 401st and Givati Brigades, has effectively taken control of strategic locations in Rafah including the Rafah crossing, the Philadelphi Corridor, and vital neighborhoods such as NPK, Brazil, and parts of Tel Sultan. The ultimate objective has been to disrupt the smuggling routes which bring weapons and military equipment into Gaza.

These operations have also uncovered and destroyed multiple Hamas underground systems, significantly impairing the organization’s logistical abilities.

What missions remain in Rafah?

The IDF’s current task involves completely neutralizing remnants of the Rafah battalions, many of whom have retreated to Khan Yunis. Those who remain are utilizing underground structures to evade capture, selectively engaging with Israeli forces.

And what about the Philadelphi Corridor?

In efforts to cut off Hamas’s supply lines permanently, the IDF will conduct extensive scans along the Philadelphi Corridor. This mission will involve the Technology and Logistics Division and will focus on thwarting any attempts of re-establishment of smuggling operations. Creation of a secure logistics axis towards Rafah is also part of the plan.

While the operational level progress continues, decisions at the diplomatic level regarding future actions in Rafah have yet to be finalized. Current estimations predict major combat operations in this southern city of Gaza will wrap up within the next week.
