    Published on

    What it’s about

A massive crowd of approximately 150,000 people gathered in Tel Aviv’s Democracy Square (Kaplan) on Saturday evening, joined by 70 additional protest sites across Israel. Demonstrators demanded immediate elections and the release of hostages held in Gaza.

    Why it matters

Former hostage Ilana Gritzewesky’s emotional and powerful speech highlighted the personal toll taken on those kidnapped by Hamas, emphasizing the strength and solidarity of the Israeli people while calling attention to grievances against the current government.

    Key Details

    Gritzewesky recounts her ordeal

“I was brutally kidnapped on October 7. My jaw was injured, my arm was dislocated, and I lost hearing in my left ear,” Gritzewesky revealed to the crowd, recounting her 55 days in captivity. Despite Gritzewesky’s release on November 30, her partner Matan Zangauker remains a hostage in Gaza. “I was held by human monsters,” she stated, describing the harrowing conditions, bombings, and abuse endured.

    Support from Israel brings hope

Gritzewesky expressed gratitude towards her fellow citizens: “During captivity, I saw the demonstrations in Israel calling for our release. It made me feel like I was not forgotten.” She noted that these demonstrations gave her hope and a sense of connection with her homeland even in the darkest moments.

    Criticism of the government

Gritzewesky did not hold back in criticizing the government: “Not a single minister bothered to call and ask about my well-being!” She specifically called out ministers like Ben Gvir and Netanyahu for their lack of personal engagement and for abandoning the hostages, describing their actions as “shameful.”

    Statements from other former hostages

Shani Goren, another former hostage, joined Gritzewesky in speaking at the demonstration. She marked the 29th birthday of her close friend and still-hostage, Arbel Yehud. Goren, who was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz, stated, “Until Arbel and everyone else return home, we can’t even begin to discuss rehabilitation and moving forward.” She concluded her heartfelt plea with, “Bring her home. Bring them all home. Now!”

    Bottom Line

The protest in Tel Aviv highlighted deep-seated frustrations with the current government while showcasing the unity and resilience of the Israeli people. The strong words from the former hostages laid bare the human impact of the conflict and reinforced the urgent demand for decisive action.
