What it is
The Beersheba Midbarium is a groundbreaking experiential animal park that offers visitors a unique chance to immerse themselves in the movements and behaviors of animals. This innovative initiative in the northwest of Beersheba is like no other, with interactive experiences designed to enhance the understanding and appreciation of wildlife.
Why it matters
The Midbarium stands as a testament to Israel’s commitment to wildlife conservation and education. It supports not just local fauna but offers a sanctuary and breeding ground for species from different parts of the world. This park melds entertainment with educational opportunities, reflecting Israel’s innovative spirit in wildlife management and ecological design on an international stage.
Details
Covering 140 dunams (37 acres), the Midbarium demonstrates progressive zoo design, minimizing barriers to allow visitors a real encounter with the habitat of its diverse wildlife, which includes over 100 species like leopards, giraffes, eagles, and even white lions. Cerebral interactive experiences such as “becoming” a snake or stalking like a leopard are core features. Part of its awe factor includes ascending to view the horizon like a giraffe or skillfully ambushing like a crocodile.
The Vision
Designed by Dutch architect Erik van Vliet, the park sidesteps conventional zoo design. Its interactions focus on making guests feel part of an animal’s world. The Midbarium illustrates the richness of Israel’s desert terrain and offers ecological education in ways that redefine being part of nature.
Leadership and Involvement
A collaborative masterpiece, this project involved a talented team from Israel and around the world, backed by the generosity of the Mandel Foundation and various local groups such as the Beersheba Economic Development Company. The result: an expansive habitat promoting ecological encounters and understanding.
Supporting Israel’s Wildlife Goals
Situated near the original zoo’s site, the Midbarium Medicine and Veterinary Clinic saves and rehabilitates injured wildlife of the Negev. Conveying Israel’s obligation to preserve wildlife morals, this aids animals for a return to the wild while also enhancing visitors’ knowledge of Israel’s natural beauty.
Community Engagement
Local residents actively contribute to Midbarium’s operations, symbolizing community bonding through caring for national wildlife treasures and extending the educational tale of coexistence.
