What it is about
The Knesset announced plans to unveil a new memorial for victims of terror attacks, designed by artist Ella Littwitz. This memorial will stand alongside the existing monument for fallen IDF soldiers.
Why it matters
Spearheaded by Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana, this initiative seeks to honor the thousands of Israeli civilians who have been tragically killed in terror attacks since the country’s establishment. The memorial symbolizes a nation’s commitment to remembering its heroes and mourning the innocents lost to terrorism.
Unique Design by Ella Littwitz
The memorial, created by artist Ella Littwitz, was chosen through a thorough selection process involving two expert committees and input from bereaved families and victims’ organizations. It features a black reflecting pool symbolizing loss and hope, with an inscription from the book of Isaiah: “Then your light will break forth like the dawn.”
A Commitment to Remembrance
Speaker Amir Ohana stated, “The memorial will reflect the immense pain of losing so many lives prematurely, alongside the hope, prayer, and knowledge that the people of Israel will triumph over their enemies and grow through grief.”
An Expression of Shared Israeli Loss
Ivy Moses, chairman of The Victims of Hostilities Organization, praised the initiative: “IDF’s fallen soldiers and terror victims are brothers in life and in death. For years, we felt the absence of a monument dedicated to victims of terror attacks. This new memorial finally gives expression to that shared loss.”
Looking Forward
The cornerstone for the memorial will be laid on October 28 in a ceremony attended by bereaved families and government officials, timed to coincide with the first anniversary of the October 7 massacre and the start of the Israel-Hamas War. This memorial is expected to play a significant role in future state ceremonies, further anchoring the nation’s dedication to honor and remember its victims.
