Securing Israel’s Borders: An Urgent Imperative for National Safety

    Published on

    What it is about

In light of the recent events, specifically the attack on October 7, the need for stringent border security has become undeniably essential. Technological measures, while advanced, must be complemented by a strong physical presence of soldiers to adequately secure Israel’s borders.

    Why it matters

Israel’s permeable borders pose a significant threat to its national security. The citizens living near these borders are in constant danger, and the events of October 7 have highlighted the urgency of tightening border security measures. Additionally, the increasing influence of Iranian-backed groups in neighboring areas necessitates an immediate response.

    The Current Situation

Many villages in the North, such as the small town of Ghajar on the Israeli-Lebanese border, remain vulnerable as they lack a robust buffer zone. Similar issues are faced by Jewish communities along the northern border. UN forces have not been effective in maintaining these buffer zones, allowing Hezbollah militants to approach dangerously close.

    Border Crossing Concerns

Before October 7, the border crossing in Israel’s northern Sharon area was almost entirely permeable, often exploited for illegal entries. Even now, despite increased military efforts by the IDF, there remain numerous instances of infiltration.

    Buffer Zone Necessities

A substantial buffer zone could drastically improve security, providing a critical defensive depth against potential terrorists. The enforcement of such zones is crucial for the protection of Israeli citizens.

    Jordanian Border Challenges

The border with Jordan, extending over 300 km, has traditionally been primarily secured by Jordanian forces. However, Iranian subversion in Jordan poses significant risks. Jordan itself has shown signs of resisting Iranian influence, but the threat persists.

    Iranian Ambitions in Jordan

Should Iran manage to destabilize Jordan, it would extend its influence to Israel’s eastern borders. This expansion is a clear and present danger that Israel must prepare for.

Polygamy and Security Concerns in the Negev

The lack of enforcement against polygamy among Bedouins in the Negev has resulted in increased Palestinian presence from Gaza, heightening security concerns. Addressing this issue and securing the southern borders is an urgent necessity.

    The Bottom Line

Long before October 7, stringent border security was necessary, and now it is an absolute imperative. Israeli citizens are justified in their demands for more robust security measures, and decision-makers must respond decisively.
